Performance Gal Costa

The song “Meu nome é Gal” composed by Roberto Carlos specially for the voice of Gal Costa was one of her statement songs that consolidated her musical career. “Meu nome é Gal” (in English “My name is Gal”) was a response to another singer of the Tropicália movement, Caetano Veloso, that was against her stage name (Gal Costa). He believed that she should chose a more Brazilian name, such as Maria. “Meu nome é Gal” is at the same time a challenge to his musical partner and the consolidation of her stage name: Gal Costa.

Analysis of the Mitski song “Bug Like an Angel”

Bug Like an Angel is the first track of the 2023 album “The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We”. Mitski is a Japanese -American singer and song writer and one of my favorite artists of all time.

The album has many influences from indie, country and folk and presents themes about addiction, loneliness and self loathing. With a heavy symbolic lyricism, Mitski is able to convey many emotions on a poetic light.

This is the first track and sets the tone for the whole album. It is very melancholic and introspective, and uses images from catholicism that are present throughout the album.

“Bug Like an Angel” starts with an intro chord progression on the acoustic guitar (Db, Ab, Eb, Bb) that is repeated twice before the main melody. This melodic pattern is repeated through the whole song (with one variation in the middle of the song, more on it later).

The main melody starts in the middle of the chord progression, what conveys a sense on unbalance and uncertainty. The first two verses (“ There’s a bug like an angel stuck to the bottom/ Of my glass, with a little bit left” ) sets the environment that will be explored as the song evolves.

The instrumental is very simple, only with the acoustic guitar and voice. The soft and clear voice contrasts with the heavy lyrics, specially on the second half of the first stanza ( “As I got older, I learned I’m a drinker/ Sometimes a drink feels like family “).

After, there is a very contrasting dynamic and texture change. There is a strong choir and the addition of a bass guitar and the piano. The choir sings “Family “ as a way to intensify the importance of it on the meaning of the song and also to break the sense of “order” stablished earlier.

Shortly after, the dynamic goes back to being soft, and the melody continues like the first part, only with the continuing of the piano and bass to the instrumentation.

There is a change on the chord progression right after on “Amateur mistake/ You can take it from me” (instead of Db, Ab it is Db, Fm). This change not only emphasizes the lyrics (where the character recognizes their mistakes), but also makes the listener to be on their toes again, uncertain of what is coming next. Instead of going back to the beginning of the chord progression, it jumps to the middle of it (on Eb) and the choir is introduced once again.

The last part of the melody comes back to only voice and acoustic guitar. It conveys the honesty and rawness of the song’s message. The voice is clear and raw, without many embellishments. And it has a “angrier” delivery, most prominent in “I try to remember the wrath of the devil/ Was also given him by God”. This last verse ties up all the images and meanings explored through the song and shows the tragic essence of addiction.

The song ends with the choir again and the full instrumentation, giving a church-like feeling to the conclusion and makes reference to all the catholic symbols in the lyrics. It finishes on a open chord, that can be interpreted as a way to show that the issues raised by the song are still pending and will continue on the next tracks.
